Six Of The Most Unusual Cars Ever Made

I n the car company world, making a classic and timeless car that looks great regardless of how old the model is, is a difficult task. Some cars look like they belong in a museum for their outstanding craftsmanship, while some cars also look like they belong in a museum albeit for entirely different reasons.

Whether it’s the kind of weird that’ll have you swearing the model is ahead of its time or simply a comically strange design, here are the most unusual cars ever made!

Chevrolet SSR

You know when you can’t decide between gifts for a friend, so you get them everything they like because you want to stay on the safe side? Seems like the designer for this car was going with the same idea.

The Chevrolet Super Sport Roadster looks like a convertible, a sports car, and a pickup truck all at the same time. Although the engineering was pretty great, with a top cover to get ahead of aerodynamics and a powerful engine tagging along, it was not the best locomotive in terms of practicality.

Stout Scarab

Named and designed after the beetle itself, the Stout Scarab is one of the cars that didn’t quite succeed in its time but managed to get its fame back in the future. Made in the 1930s, it is largely known as the world’s first minivan instead of its bug-like shape.

What once debuted -and failed- as a strange-looking car, is a famous collectors’ item in the world of car fanatics!

BMW Isetta

With only three wheels, two passenger seats, and only one large door, the BMW Isetta is now classified as a microcar, largely known as a bubble car, and more affectionately known as the cuddle coach.

The single door on the front opens up much like a refrigerator -representing its parent company Iso- with hinges on the side swinging the windshield and even the dashboard out when opened. It was quite the star during its debut, and then rose to fame yet again after years. The car has now become a classic in the car world.

Fiat Multipla

Unusual cars either find their stardom right after their debut or decades later. Such is not the case with the Fiat Multipla, at least not until its main shock factor was taken away.

Four headlights sitting on the car with two more on an elevated windshield, Multipla was argued to be one of the ugliest cars by critics, causing buyers to shy away from it and sales to drop. However, a redesign in 2004 allowed audiences to see the true capabilities of the car, which proved to be so successful that the minivan can still be found for sale.

L'Oeuf Electrique Concept Car

One of its kind, and way ahead of its time! The L'Oeuf Électrique -or the ‘electric egg’- was made by the French industrial designer Paul Arzens, as his personal vehicle. Having an interest in all kinds of fuels, using electricity as a means of power for this car was his concept of what the future could look like.

Norman Timbs Special

Another one-of-a-kind car, the car named after its designer looked like it came straight out of a 2000’s futuristic movie or a racetrack. With a sleek and elegant build, this streamlined car took an entirety of three years for Norman Timbs to design and create his dream car by hand.

It easily became the talk of the town with its lack of doors and roof. Even though it was quite popular, more models were never made, largely due to the production process being rather expensive. If you were planning on visiting to see this car in person, slam your brakes, as it was destroyed in the 2018 Malibu fires.

Final Thoughts

Designing and creating a car is no joke. It can take months on end just to design a model you’re satisfied with, and even more time for the production process to complete. All your hard work could go down the drain if your target audiences do not appreciate it as well as you expect them to.

However in the search to make a great car some of these creators ended up with the most unusual cars ever made.
